Food & Medicine Homology

" Homology of medicine and food" is an important concept in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), referring to the crossover between many foods and medicines in their sources and efficacies. These substances can be enjoyed as daily diet and also help prevent and treat diseases, with no absolute boundary between them.

In Compendium of Materia Medica by Li Shizhen of the Ming Dynasty, approximately 300 medicinal substances are also listed as food ingredients (such as Chinese yam, lotus seeds, ginger, etc.), systematically explaining the characteristics of dual-purpose medicine and food. Both food and medicine are classified according to the four natures (cold, hot, warm, cool) and five tastes (sour, bitter, sweet, pungent, salty), regulating the body's yin-yang balance through their properties and flavors. For example, ginger is warm in nature and pungent in taste, which can not only season dishes but also dispel cold and relieve exterior syndromes.
